BEFORE YOU BUY A SPLIT SYSTEM –
YOU NEED TO KNOW WHERE IT CAN GO
Your house is hot. You need an air conditioner. Before you rush out and buy the biggest baddest split system you can find, please put some thought into where it might go. Air conditioner placement is very important. Not as important as feeding the dog, but very close to it. Specifications for Mitsubishi split systems are listed in multiple places on this site, but we will go through specifics here. Most split systems on the market are about the same size, so this page will help with almost any split system you buy.
The first thing you need to know about split system air conditioner placement, is that the ideal spot for your head unit is on an external wall of your home. That means a wall which has the outside world behind it.
For small systems up to 5kw you need 900mm of space
For large systems 6 – 9kw you need 1200mm of space
These are your minimum requirements. You should ideally have space either side of the unit horizontally and you must have space above all split system air conditioners for air to flow through into the coil.
If you look at the height measurements – please add an extra 150 mm above your head unit. This is non – negotiable. Any less than that will restrict the airflow and reduce it’s ability to cool. I am guessing you want this thing to actually work.
AIR CONDITIONER PLACEMENT MEANS EVERYTHING
* Please note the importance of your wife’s birthday is directly proportionate to the value you place on your marriage. A high value on the marriage thing will generally increase the importance you should place on remembering her birthday. Either way, if you are occupying the same bed in the middle of a Queensland summer, you’re going to need a split system just to stay married. So put it in the right spot.
YOUR INSTALLATION WILL BE ONE OF THESE
These pretty pictures go with the diagram below and should help you decide where the thing is going to go. There’s an 80% chance yours will be an A or B type install. If not, we can still deal with it but try to find a way to make it A or B and it will be cheaper to install and run more efficiently.
THE PLAN OPPOSITE SHOULD HELP
A : Standard install covered fully by our listed prices
B : Standard Install covered fully by our listed prices
C : Slightly more than A and B, usually extra $100
D : Up Over is a maximum $500 extra, but usually $250
As you can see, even difficult installs won’t break the bank. When people ask where should air conditioner be installed – the best place is A or B for energy efficiency. But if you don’t have an easy location, we will consider a C or D.
With this quoting structure there’s no need for us to drive around all summer admiring peoples homes. If you want us to do the job – fine, please just guess which one resembles yours the closest. Tell us on the phone.
Being up front and honest about difficult installs actually makes yours cheaper because we send more guys, with more gear and we’re mentally prepared for a difficult job. If you tell us it’s an A or B and we arrive to find out it’s a D, then it changes the game. We may need more materials or more labour, or both.
If we have to leave site to get materials, it will cost more. Best to tell us up front.
PHYSICS OF LIQUID ON PLANET EARTH
PHYSICS 101 : Water flows downhill, powered by gravity. Being cheeky with your air conditioner placement only angers the gods. If we put yours in the centre of the house, then try to fight gravity with a pump, and force the water up through the roof and out to the side – then gravity will win in the end. The result is inevitable. Water will leak and it will ruin your carpet or plaster. Please do not ask us to install at any E locations because you might hear ‘Yes, ok, we just need to get something from the car’… This will be followed by the sound of screeching tyres and a cloud of smoke as we drive away very fast.
You need to call an air conditioning man who has ambition, but very little common sense. He might do that job for you but we won’t..
STILL UNSURE ABOUT WHERE TO INSTALL YOUR AIR CONDITIONER
If you’re still unsure about the best place for your new split system air conditioner, there are other ways to work it out.
1. Take some photos with your cellphone and email rather than text them. Email address up top. I can then draw pretty pictures on your pictures and send them back. We don’t need to see your home. The job can be done. If we have to come twice – you pay more so help us help you keep more of your money.
3. Type your address into google and click on the realestate.com.au listing for that address. Nearly every house in every city now has one of these listings and I can see into nearly any home at any time. Hi Mum. From there I will mark the best locations to install air conditioning, and send it back.
You can text or email anytime. But if you want to call, please do so during business hours. Business hours are 7am – 6pm Monday to Saturday unless you’re family*
*In which case business hours are 1pm – 2pm Tuesday
BEST EVER CUSTOMER SUPPLIED PLAN
90% OF INSTALLATIONS DON’T NEED TO WORRY ABOUT ANY OF THIS
CORRECT AIR CONDITIONER PLACEMENT WILL BRING GOOD FORTUNE
Most homes have plenty of external walls with 1200mm + vacant space. Split systems are designed to be installed hassle free in nearly any home. If you’ve read this far then you know as much as I do about air conditioner placement. I’ve saved ten minutes on the phone you’re closer to getting a cold house than you were yesterday. Bear in mind that only the most difficult installs require a pre-marked plan, photos or investigation. However. Giving you the right advice on air conditioning is what we do.
Send in any questions you have and you’ll get an answer at some stage.
THE BEST PLACE TO INSTALL AIR CON
Put it in your own home. I can’t stress that enough. If you install it somewhere else, chances are you won’t get to enjoy it that much. I’ve put in thousands of them, and only ever been able to enjoy three. The ones I put on my own walls.
Learn from my mistakes.
If you take a look around,, it’s a safe bet that the house you’re in now, is your own. To verify these suspicions, you could try calling out ‘mum’ or ‘dear’ or ‘what’s for dinner?’ If you get an answer and the voice sounds kind of familiar then you’re probably at home and we can move on to step two.
In your shed there should be a tape measure. Once you find it please measure the wall you think the air conditioner will go on. Then take a look behind that wall and see if the outside world is behind it. If not, choose another wall.
If you have an external wall and enough space, as outlined in the pictures above, then you’re good to go. Don’t bother reading the rest of what’s on here, it’s only there to give the impression we know a lot about air conditioning.
THOSE MEASUREMENTS
Your house is hot. You need an air conditioner. Before you rush out and buy the biggest baddest split system you can find, please measure. Do you have enough space?
For small systems up to 5kw you need
890mm of space (width)
For large systems 6 – 9kw
1200mm of space (width)
You must also have 150mm clearance above the unit. 120mm will work, but it won’t be as good.
Less than 100mm and we will glue some sneakers to the wall. The cooling effect will be just the same.
INSTALLATION DIAGRAM
The map below will show you exactly what it cost to install your air con. There may also be some buried treasure but we’re yet to find it.
A : Standard Price Install
B : Standard Price Install
C : Extra charge around $150
D : Extra charge maximum $500 usually around $300 – $500
As you can see, even difficult installs won’t break the bank. When people ask where should air conditioner be installed – the best place is A or B for energy efficiency. But if you don’t have an easy location, we will consider a C or D.

D type are the hardest and most expensive. it involves lifting your roof during the hottest part of summer and that cost money. It will also cost you more to run, pumping the gas so much further on every cycle. the best thing you can do is find an external wall to put it on.
